Hundreds Of Camden Kids Bouncing Their Way To Future Fitness

By Kim Glovas

CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) -- Close to a thousand Camden youth are attending a three day basketball clinic with a focus on fitness and nutrition.

The clinic is being sponsored by the Sixers and Virtua, a leading health care provider in South Jersey.

Virtua's Doctor Chris Pomerink says getting the fundamentals of exercise and nutrition into kids between the ages of 10 and 14 is an important first step toward a healthy life.

"If we can get in front of our children now, teach them a couple things about physical fitness, a couple things about nutrition, that they can take away from this and throughout their adulthood, so that maybe down the line, we're not dealing with the diabetes epidemic that we're dealing with, the obesity, the heart and vascular disease."

In addition to the drills and games over the three day clinic, each child will take home a new pair of Nike sneakers, a drawstring backpack, and practice jersey.
