Hundreds Expected To Bid Farewell To Darby Borough Officer Shot Dead Inside His Home

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Friends and family will gather this morning for the funeral of a Darby Borough police officer who was shot to death inside his home, last week.

At just 26 years old, Officer Mark Hudson had already spent ten years serving the public, beginning as a junior volunteer firefighter in Yeadon at just 16. He made lieutenant in the company by the time he was 19 then, after receiving a degree in criminal justice, he went to work for Darby Borough police. His chief, there, says he served with compassion and grace.

Hudson was shot to death inside his home, one week ago. His former girlfriend is charged with first degree murder in his death, accused of using his service revolver to kill him, after a stormy relationship in which Hudson sought a protection from abuse order against her.

The funeral service at St. Joseph Church begins at 11:30am in Collingdale. It follows a viewing at 10:00am. If an impromptu vigil outside his Darby Township home on Wednesday is any indication, hundreds of mourners will call to honor the man whose short life was devoted to public service.
