Horses Of Defunct Philadelphia Carriage Company Find New Home

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On Jan. 1, the Philadelphia Carriage Company ceased operations following the city's efforts to shut it down after discovering what they city describe as inhumane conditions.

The 10 horses that lived there were turned over to the city, needed somewhere else to go.

"And their new home is in Mount Airy, Maryland at the Gentle Giant Draft Hose Rescue," says Ame Dorminy with Philadelphia's Animal Care and Control Team (ACCT Philly).

"We are grateful that Gentle Giants has agreed to accept these horses into their esteemed program and know that they will receive the high-quality care they deserve," adds Vincent Medley, executive director of ACCT Philly.

The horses were transferred safely over the weekend and made it to Maryland in "good health."

So what's next?

"They give the horses time to relax and decompress," Dorminy explains. "And then they get to know them better and decide where a good path is for them moving forward."

Some of the horses may live out the rest of their life in the sanctuary.

"[And] some of the horses may be moved into adoptive homes," Dorminy says.

But Dorminy assures the assures that are adopted will be used solely for riding and not commercial gain.
