SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) -- The extreme cold claimed a life in New Jersey over the weekend.

Police say a homeless man was found dead inside a tent in South Jersey, and his killer is believed to be the frigid weather.

Capt. Stephen Jones of New Jersey State Police say 59-year-old Eugene Powell died even though he had people checking on him.

"Late Saturday morning, we learned about the tragic death of a homeless man in Southampton (Township)," Jones told KYW Newsradio.  "Troopers were advised that he was discovered unresponsive by a hunter and a patron of a local convienience store who had gone back to check on him."

The low temperature on Saturday morning was 12 degrees F., and a "Code Blue" was in place.  Police are asking the public to have this death serve as a reminder to check on loved ones and neighbors during this extreme cold weather.
