Holiday Decorating Hazards

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  One of the best parts of the holiday season is looking at all the beautiful lights and decorations.

And no doubt many of people will take advantage of the mild weather to get decorations hung this weekend.

But before you dig out those lights, 3 On Your Side's Jim Donovan has some important information to keep you and your family safe.

Holiday decorations have a way of making us feel jolly, but making your home look festive could come with some serious risks, like falling off a ladder.

"If you haven't climbed a ladder since last year, you shouldn't probably get on the roof this year," said Dan O'mara with State Farm.

O'mara is well aware of holiday decorating hazards.

He suggests hiring a pro to hang your exterior lights.

Be careful inside too. While many of us do it, it's not a good idea to use furniture to reach high places.

Another risk, electrical fires. Make sure you look for the U-L label to be sure lights and cords were safety tested.

Never string together more than three sets of lights to avoid overloading. And if you're reusing lights, inspect them.

"They could get brittle you know, is there exposed wire there?," said O'Mara.

And if you have a real Christmas tree in your home, keep it watered. Dry trees and electrical sparks are a dangerous combination.

Also, watch out for candles. Christmas day is the number one day for candle fires.

So consider battery operated, flameless candles to give your home that cozy glow.

If you prefer traditional or scented candles, "You just got to be careful where you put them," said O'mara.

State Farm tells us December is one of the top three months for home fire claims. Many of those are related to electrical or cooking fires. So don't let the hustle and bustle of the season distract you from taking proper safety precautions.
