New Starbucks Holiday Cups Brews Social Media Debate

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Starbucks' holiday beverages have returned to locations, along with its red holiday cups.

The new design has brewed a debate on social media. Some are apparently upset the cup's red design lacks holiday symbols.

"In the past, we have told stories with our holiday cups designs," said said Jeffrey Fields, Starbucks vice president of Design & Content in a news release on the company's website. "This year we wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories."

Fields describes the look: "This year's iconic red Starbucks cup features a two-toned ombré design, with a bright poppy color on top that shades into a darker cranberry below. We have anchored the design with the classic Starbucks holiday red that is bright and exciting," said Fields. "The ombré creates a distinctive dimension, fluidity and weightedness."

The #MerryChristmasStarbucks and #RedCups have emerged on social media, with people sharing their thoughts about the holiday cups.
