Historic Camden Building Carries Major Significance As It Turns 100

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- Every month, a group of retirees meet at Victor's Pub in Camden. Afterwards, they walk to the lofts bearing the same name.

The luxury apartments are inside the Victor Building, which is turning 100 years old. For many of the men and women gathered, the building isn't known as a place to live. Rather, it was a place to work.

"I worked in this building for quite a few years on the fifth floor," said one former employee. " I worked here for 37 years," he continued.

The lofts were once known as Building 17, where the Victor Talking Machine Company assembled their products. Victor Talking Machines later became RCA, and the company is known for so much more than making audio players and TVs.

"I (helped) work on the Apollo Moonshot project," said Jim Weber, a retired employee.

Weber helped create radios which the astronauts used to communicate with mission control. "Our mission was to bring them back," said Weber.

And the team at RCA were instrumental in doing just that. Weber says he hopes the building which contains so much history is able to last another century.

"At least they didn't tear it down. They could have turned it into a shopping mall. I mean this is great," said Weber
