Hillary Clinton Thanks Supporters, Says We Owe Trump A Chance To Lead

NEW YORK, NY (CBS) -- Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine delivered remarks late Wednesday morning after losing the presidential election to Republican Donald Trump.

Clinton started out congratulating Trump, saying, "I hope he will be a successful president for all Americans."

"This is not the outcome we wanted or worked so hard for... I'm sorry we didn't win this election."

Clinton added, "Being your candidate has been one of the greatest honors of my life."

"I know how disappointed you feel because I feel it too, and so do tens of millions of Americans who've invested in this effort."

"Our campaign was never about one person or one election. It was about the country we love and building an America that's hopeful," Clinton said.

"We have seen our nation is more deeply divided than we thought, but I still believe in America and always will."

Speaking on Trump, Clinton said, "Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead."

At one point Clinton spoke directly to young voters, "This loss hurts, but never stop believing that fighting for what's right is worth it."

"Our responsibility as citizens is to keep doing our part and I know you will."

In earlier remarks, Tim Kaine said he is "excited and proud of Hillary," adding "she made such a wonderful team."

Trump Updates Twitter Bio: President-Elect Of United States

Clinton called Trump early to concede earlier Wednesday, but did not make an appearance until now.

Trump said of the phone call, "She congratulated us – it's about us – on our victory. And I congratulated her and her family on a very, very hard fought campaign. She fought very hard."

President Obama also called Donald Trump to congratulate him on his victory. He invited Trump to visit the White House on Thursday.
