By Cleve Bryan

HAMILTON TOWNSHIP, NJ (CBS) – The discovery of higher-than-acceptable lead levels in the drinking water has prompted the Hamilton Township School District in Mercer County to take action.

In a statement on their website the District began a voluntary lead testing program over Spring Break and discovered unacceptable lead levels at two elementary schools.

Several contaminated samples at the Morgan School caused school officials to turn off all the water fountains and provide bottled water to students and staff.

They also moved all food preparation offsite at Morgan.

There was one water fountain shut off at Greenwood Elementary after a contaminated sample.

No word from the District on how many of the 24 schools in the district have been tested to date.

Following the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, New Jersey  lawmakers are considering a bill that would require regular lead testing in the water at schools.
