Heavy Use Of PA Online Registration In Days Before Deadline

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Pennsylvania residents took big advantage of the state's new online voting registration system in the days before the Tuesday deadline to be eligible for the November election.

A spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of State says from its launch in August of last year through the Tuesday deadline, nearly 900,000 people used the state's online voter registration system.

Deadline day, Tuesday, recorded the highest number of users ever: more than 87,000.

Monday saw the second-highest total: 77,000-plus.

Those numbers are not entirely comprised of new registrations; about 40-percent of those figures represent people making changes to existing registrations.

All paper applications have yet to be processed, but as of Tuesday, registered Democratic voters in Pennsylvania continued to far outpace GOP voters, 48-and-a-half percent compared to less than 38-percent registered as Republican.
