Heavy rain in Philadelphia region Friday night, chances of snow away from the city

CBS News Philadelphia

Have your umbrella handy around the Philadelphia region in the next two days, as we expect rain for most of us — there's even snow in some areas in Pennsylvania in the weather forecast.

A NEXT Weather Alert is in place because the rain could be heavy Friday evening into Saturday morning, with potential to disrupt your evening commute and Passover weekend travel or spring break plans.

Scattered showers will persist throughout Friday and temperatures will leave us feeling raw today with highs running 15 degrees below normal in the upper 40s.

By the evening, 1-2 inches of heavy rain develops and continues into early Saturday.

It will be cold enough for a few wet snowflakes to mix in, and a coating of snow is possible in the suburbs north and west of Philly.  In the Poconos, temperatures will hover near freezing with the ground at freezing – so a snow shovel may be needed with several inches or more of accumulating snow expected early Saturday morning.

Scattered showers are expected throughout the day Saturday with some wet flakes coating grassy areas north and west of the city. It's a different story in the Poconos where several inches or more of snow is possible. Temperatures across the area will run 20 degrees or more below average in the upper 30s and low 40s.

By Sunday, the rain will be gone but clouds remain with some late day sunshine. The good news is the temperatures rebound to near 60.

It's even warmer by Monday and Tuesday, with high temperatures in the upper 60s to near 70 with sunshine returning.
