Health: Is A Popular Hairstyle Leading To Baldness?

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A ponytail might offer casual style and relief from the heat, but it turns out the popular hairstyle could also cause hair loss and even balding.

Hair loss related to ponytails is called traction alopecia, and anything that puts hair under constant strain or tension can cause it.

"Unfortunately, it happens all the time," says Dr. Scott Boden, a dermatologist. "People are continuing to do a hairstyle that contributes to permanent loss when they're older."

Some patients suffering from traction alopecia are now undergoing a procedure where hairs are transplanted from one area of the head to the bald areas.
