Health Department Rules Out Measles In Montgomery County Teen

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- A 15-year-old boy from Montgomery County who was being evaluated and tested for a suspected case of measles has been cleared of the potentially deadly disease, health officials announced Sunday.

The Montgomery County Department of Health said the teen was presenting symptoms of the disease and was under quarantine at his home. But after extensive lab testing, health officials said the measles virus was not detected.

Lab results also showed the teen has an immunity to the virus, which means he previously received the vaccine.

"We are extremely relieved that there is currently no public health threat in Montgomery County from measles," said Josh Shapiro, Chair, Montgomery County Commissioners, "and I compliment the staff in the Montgomery County Department of Health and the state Department of Health for the professional manner in which they handled this case."

Despite giving the all clear, both the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the Montgomery County Health Department continue to urge parents to have their children immunized.
