PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Halloween is a very special time of year for kids — a chance to load up on treats. But the sad truth is that we also have to make certain that we take precautions to insure safety.

If you have a child who is trick-or-treating, please go over the candy once they get home to make sure it's safe. Make sure that someone hasn't done something to damage the candy and make it potentially harmful.

In addition, if you have a child who has an allergy, make sure you go over every piece of candy, and that you know what your child's going to have. It is not unusual to see children who may have been exposed to peanuts in products that are not supposed to contain peanuts.

Please check out the packaging.
