Growing Concern Over Misuse Of ADHD Drugs

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a very serious health issue in our country and many people are being diagnosed. Fortunately, treatments are being made available. But there is a problem. It has to do with abuse of some of the medications used to control the symptoms of ADHD, especially if they are in the wrong hands.

The concern is that a growing number of kids are taking ADHD drugs to get high or increase alertness. What they do not realize is that misuse of the drugs can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening symptoms, including agitation and rapid heartbeat.

A study conducted by the CDC looked at 581 people and they found that 42% of teens involved had moderate to severe life-threatening events.
