Group Proposes Plan To Build Indoor Bike Track For FDR Park In South Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A group of cyclists and architects is proposing a 175-thousand square-foot indoor bike track for FDR Park in South Philadelphia.

The group is called Project 250, for the 250 meter hardwood track that would go inside the proposed velodrome. Detailed plans to be presented to the Parks and Recreation Commission, next month, call for a swooping, oval, structure to be built on four acres at the east side of the park, along Broad Street. The group says it would improve the remaining parkland and replace the lost open space with a neighborhood park on Hartranft Street.

The building, they say, would host 80 indoor cycling events and 100 concerts a year for up to 6,000 spectators. It would also serve as a center for youth cycling programs.

Deputy Mayor Mike DiBerardinis says this is the beginning of a process.

"There'll be ample opportunity for the public to participate in that and, if needed, other forums to discuss and air their opinions," said DiBerardinis.
