Grandfather Dead, Grandson Injured In East Mount Airy Hit-And-Run

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that took the life of a 73-year-old man and injured his grandson in Northwest Philadelphia.

Police say the victim had just picked his 13-year-old grandson up from football practice about 8:15 p.m. Friday when an SUV ran a stop sign at Gorgas Lane and Ardleigh Street in East Mount Airy, and struck his car.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His grandson was taken to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Police say two men inside the SUV fled the scene on foot -- but were apprehended a short time later. Investigators are now trying to determine if they were driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Police say charges are now pending.
