Graduates From Elite Colleges Are Not More Satisfied Or More Successful

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - High school seniors who've been rejected at elite colleges are not so pleased these days. But, a new Gallup survey of 37,000 graduates of all ages in 50 states found that "highly selective schools don't produce happier people or better workers...inspiring professors, no matter where they teach, just might."

While the poll doesn't mention earnings, it was based on 30 years of research.

People who feel engaged in their jobs are most productive. That relatively small group didn't attend the most prestigious schools. Only 11% reported being "thriving" in aspects of their lives - financial stability, strong social network and a sense of purpose.

The strongest correlation was feeling emotionally supported by a professor or mentor. Those people were twice as likely to be engaged at work. The poll data are clear; graduation from elite college provides no discernible difference.

A teacher who "believes in a student makes a lifetime of difference."
