Gov. Christie Calls On Cuba To Hand Over Fugitive Cop-killer

TRENTON, NJ (CBS) – Gov. Christie is calling on the Cuban government to hand over a convicted cop-killer before diplomatic relations between the U.S. and the Caribbean nation are restored.

Christie, a potential 2016 Republican candidate for President, criticized Cuba during an international business conference at the State Department on Tuesday.

"I have no problem with Cuba being welcomed back into the family of civilized nations, but you have to be civilized," Christie said. "And harboring a cop-killer is not civilized conduct."

In 1979, Joanne Chesimard broke out of prison and fled to Cuba, where she was granted asylum.

Last week, President Obama proposed removing Cuba from the list of countries identified as state sponsors of terrorism.
