TOMS RIVER, N.J. (CBS) — Republican control of New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District continues as Tom MacArthur defeats Democrat Aimee Belgard.

Both candidates campaigned for Congress for the first time after serving in local government – Belgard a Burlington County Freeholder and MacArthur a former mayor in Morris County.

MacArthur moved South to Ocean County to pursue the congressional seat Jon Runyan leaves behind after deciding not to run for re-election.

Polls showed MacArthur with a double digit lead in the weeks before Election Day and he won by 55-44% over Belgard with 99% of precincts reporting.

"I'm excited and humbled and even a little overwhelmed but I'm grateful for the trust voters put in me," said MacArthur after delivering a victory speech to Ocean County Republicans in Toms River.

Belgard said in a statement, "Despite the outcome tonight, I'm so proud of the race we ran because we stood for what we believe in and I know that our message will push issues to the forefront that will strengthen America."
