Goodbye Gallery, Hello Fashion Outlets Of Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Governor Tom Wolf and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney spoke about the next step in reviving one of the neighborhoods lagging behind the times in Center City.

Work has already begun on the Fashion Outlets of Philadelphia -- formerly The Gallery. Officials say it will be the best shopping destination in the region, with outlets from top designers.

Wolf and lawmakers in Harrisburg made city and state funds available to assist in construction.

"This is exactly what the state should be doing in partnership with the city," he says, "investing in things like this."

The project will create more than 2,000 construction jobs as well as 2,300 permanent jobs once the mall opens.
Mayor Kenney says this will help bring the neighborhood back to its glory days:

"It will grow exponentially north and south because the value of the properties are higher. And you'll get higher paying rents."

Kenney says revenue generated from the outlets will help pay for schools and other vital city services.
Doors open in spring 2018.
