Gilgo Beach murder suspect, Rex Heuermann, being investigated for 1989 death of Carmen Vargas

Jailed sex workers say they had "aggressive" encounters with Rex Heuermann

(CNN) -- The man accused in the Gilgo Beach serial killings is being investigated in the death of another woman.

Investigators are looking into Rex Heuermann in connection to the death of Carmen Vargas.

Vargas' family claims her gruesome death bore "too many similarities" to the Gilgo four slayings that Heuermann is accused of committing.

Vargas was 29 years old in 1989 when her body was found dumped in Freeport, which is about seven miles west of Heuermann's lifelong home in Massapequa Park.

Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to murdering three women, whose remains were found along a short stretch of Long Island's Gilgo Beach in 2010.

He is also the prime suspect in the 2007 disappearance and death of a fourth woman.
