Gas Main Break Forces Evacuations in Kensington

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A number of residents remain evacuated after crews repaired a gas main break in Kensington.

The incident was reported shortly after 4 p.m. Thursday in the 2900 block of E Street.

PGW crews, along with the Philadelphia Fire Department and PECO, worked to repair the six-inch cast iron gas main located in the middle of the street.

The leak was later capped and the incident has been placed under control.

Twenty-nine residents living in the block were evacuated as a safety precaution. A PGW spokesperson says they are waiting for the gas in the air to dissipate before allowing residents back into their homes.

Part of the street collapsed onto the main causing the gas to leak, according to the PGW spokesperson.

There were no service interruptions.

No one was injured.
