Fuel Prices Dip Below $3 Per Gallon In Parts Of South Jersey

By Diana Rocco, Jim Melwert

LAWNSIDE, N.J., (CBS) — Falling fuel prices are a sight drivers have waited to see for a long time.

In fact, $2.97 for a gallon of gas has South Jersey drivers doing a double take.

"Caught my eye coming by," driver Bill Stonis tells CBS3.

"I was shocked. It's about time," driver Nicole Hoffman tells Eyewtiness News.

"Where we have to pump our own and it's 3.50, are you kidding me?  I almost got in an accident making the turn into here," Pennsylvania driver Tibor Janicsck tells KYW Newsradio.

At least three stations on the White Horse Pike with prices under $3.00 for a gallon of regular. The catch — you have to pay cash — but drivers are lining up gladly keeping pumps busy.

"I'm excited and I hope it stays this way," driver Melvina Yeldell said.

"I think it's magnificent. I think the economy deserves a break today," driver Shaheed Mohammad said.

"That it's two something, yes, it's crazy," driver Gianna Donato said.

"I think it reminds you of days gone by," this driver adds

Donato is a student and every cent counts. She's saving at least $4.00 on this tank — money she can use.

Prices across the Tri-State have fallen by as much as 40 cents since their highest point over Memorial Day and into early summer. AAA says winter gas is cheaper than summertime mixes and being that elections are around the corner, well that helps too.

Drivers were asked if they could remember the last time they saw prices this low:

"It's been a long time since we've seen a two on there, it's nice to see."

"Quite a while, quite a while."

"It's been way too long."

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Triple-A predicts gas prices could fall an additional 10-20 cents per gallon by the end of the October.
