Free Program Helps Small Businesses Grow

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Community College is offering small businesses tools to grow through a new city-funded program.

The goal goes beyond stronger businesses.

Beginning in January, CCP will be offering free business development workshops and training to the small businesses that college President Donald Generals says are often overlooked in economic development strategies.

"I'm speaking of the neighborhood day care centers, the corner groceries, the bodegas, the laundromats, the hair salons."

Or an independent auto supply store like Morris, in Hunting Park. Owner Monica Parrilla says businesses like hers have a far-reaching impact.

"Small businesses have the power to keep the local economy moving, to provide jobs in our area and create a significant amount of revenue."

City officials estimate there are 265 neighborhood commercial corridors that can benefit from the program, that's been dubbed "Power Up Your Business."
