Free Clinics Available To Wipe Minor Criminal Offenses From Your Record
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- People looking to have minor offenses wiped from their criminal record may be able to get some legal help next month.
Mayor Kenney says 30-thousand Philadelphians have minor criminal records eligible to be either expunged or sealed, under a new state law. He said that's something that can be crucial in helping someone find a job or housing.
"The two biggest things they're looking for is work, and a place to live. And if you can't get work and a place to live, you're pretty much in danger of going back to jail."
District Attorney Seth Williams said minor charges that are dropped, or result in a not guilty finding, are eligible to be expunged. And some second or third-degree misdemeanors like simple drug possession or disorderly conduct can be sealed from public view. Attorneys from the Philadelphia Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division will be holding free expungement clinics on November 12 at six city locations.
