Founder Of Local Organization Talks Celiac On 'The Doctors'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The founder of an Ambler-based organization focused on promoting research and support for those with celiac disease appeared on "The Doctors" daytime talk program on Tuesday.

Alice Bast, CEO of Beyond Celiac, spoke about the autoimmune disease that affects her and more than two-and-a-half million Americans, and goes undiagnosed in many more.

Bast told the show's moderators that her diagnosis came 28 years ago after constant bouts of diarrhea, migraines, chronic fatigue, bloating, and tingling in her fingers and toes.

"I was telling a friend of mine what I was going through. She's a veterinarian and she mentioned that sometimes animals have trouble with their grains and that I should get tested for celiac," said Bast.

She says going on a gluten-free diet provided relief, but she says a fear of food prompted her to start the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness, which she later re-named Beyond Celilac.
