PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Former Phillies closer Ryan Madson has not pitched in the major leagues since 2011 with the Phillies. Unfortunate injuries derailed what was looking like a promising future for Madson who finally established himself as a quality closer that season.

Despite, not pitching in a big league game since 2011, Madson is getting another chance at the majors with the Kansas City Royals.

Madson, 34, agreed to a minor-league deal with the Royals this past off-season and was invited to take part in Major League Camp.

In nine spring training games, Madson posted a 3.00 ERA and two saves.

The defending American League champs have rewarded Madson with a spot on their opening day roster.

The Royals open the season on Monday at home against the White Sox.
