Former Philadelphia Police Department Employee Arrested For Theft Of ATVs

By Dan Wing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia District Attorney's office says a former clerk at the Police Department's Auto Pound Unit has been arrested for stealing three ATVs that were impounded by police.

Authorities say Sharon Hammitt was supposed to keep records of vehicles that were impounded and sent to auction or for scrap. But they claim that between September of 2005 and October of 2010, Hammitt and her husband John forged a notary's signature and created false documents to register and title two of the ATVs in John Hammitt's name. The third ATV was originally purchased by the Hammitt's in 2003, but it went missing and was later confiscated by police in 2005. Authorities say Sharon Hammitt took the vehicle without getting the required court order releasing the ATV from police custody.

Hammitt resigned from the Police Department in 2014. She and her husband now both face a number of charges related to theft, forgery and tampering with public records in addition to other related offenses.
