Former Philadelphia Narcotics Officer Found Guilty Of Lying To Federal Investigators
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A former narcotics officer with the Philadelphia Police Department has been found guilty of making false statements to federal investigators.
The officer, 42-year-old Robertito Fontan, was accused of lying to investigators about his romantic relationship with one of the police department's confidential informants.
In 2003, several months after Fontan recruited the woman to become an informant, he became intimately involved with her. During their relationship, police say Fontan gave gifts and money to the woman.
In 2007, the DEA began investigating the informant, a suspected drug-dealer, and Fontan was assisting that investigation.
A year later, in 2008, the FBI began looking into a suspected information leak in the DEA investigation, when Fontan was interviewed about his relationship with the woman.
The jury found that Fontan lied to investigators about his relationship with the informant and about giving her gifts and money.
Fontan faces a maximum of 10 years in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 28, 2014.
