Former Congregants Gather To Say Goodbye To Beloved South Philly Church

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- On Saturday, former congregants of 'Most Blessed Sacrament Parish' at 56 Street and Chester Avenue, participated in a final mass in the auditorium.

The day of the final mass was held in the auditorium of the parish and was like a reunion of sorts as folks who had long moved out of the neighborhood returned to say a final goodbye to their Church.

Former congregant Ed Potter remembers how happy and fun the neighborhood use to be.

"It was just a great neighborhood at one time and it's a shame what happened," Potter said. "It was so vibrant and dynamic and, I don't know, things changed. I loved living around here, and I loved going to this school."

Pat Hully and late husband were married in the church. On Saturday she brought her children back for a final goodbye.

"We went past our old house," Hully said. "It is sad, my husband were living, he's deceased now, our wedding anniversary would've been sixty-two years; December of 2015."

The church has been sold. Congregants tell me there are plans to turn the building into a Charter School.
