For Nazareth H.S. Students, An Opportunity to Taste College Education

By Hadas Kuznits

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Catholic high school in Northeast Philadelphia is partnering with an adjacent Catholic university to make the transition to higher education easier for students.

Sister Maureen McGarrity, president of Holy Family, says the partnership allows eligible Nazareth Academy High School students to take college credit courses at Holy Family University at a discounted rate.

"Normally a three-credit course would cost about $1,500, and a student from Nazareth or from one of our partner schools can take a course for $400," she explained.

What's the benefit to Holy Family?

"We hope to increase the interest of the students in Holy Family once they've seen the campus and once they've seen what we have to offer," she said.

But Sister McGarrity says if students don't enroll at Holy Family University after high school, "They can take these college credits anywhere. They are transcripted as college courses, they've taken them in a college setting, and they can transfer them anywhere."
