Food Truck Review: No. 32

SCHMEAR IT

There's a simple concept here at this red truck that usually parks in University City. They've got 13 flavors of bagels, 12 different spreads and 13 mix-in ingredients. You can pick from any, so the possibilities are nearly endless – although we wouldn't recommend a chocolate chip bagel with whitefish spread and jalapenos. But that's up to you.

David Fine, a Penn grad, started the truck three years ago. The front of the truck reads, "Spread some good," a nod to the charitable component of Schmear It. Each month, a local cause receives a percentage of the profits; when we were there it was Action Aids.

Anyway, fresh bagels come from South Street Bagel early every morning. The cream cheese is your basis Kraft Philadelphia, but it becomes more exciting when hunks of lox or a spice like wasabi are mixed in. We enjoyed something my Jewish grandfather would have been proud of – an everything bagel with whitefish spread, tomato and red peppers. Well worth the $7.

My traveling companion, Channel 3's Pat Gallen, ordered a French Toast bagel with cream cheese, strawberries, banana, walnuts, cinnamon and maple syrup. An affront to the culture, if you ask me. But Pat seemed to enjoy it.
