Folks Enjoy Memorial Day Weekend Down Shore While Remembering What Holiday Is All About

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) - It might not be summer just yet -- but don't tell the folks down the shore this weekend.

Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start to summer, and many people were celebrating in Ocean City, New Jersey Sunday.

"We leave every year at 5:30 in the morning from Downington, Pa. to come to the shore," Christine Buchovecky tells CBS3 Eyewtiness News.

For Christine, and others like Joe Monte from Marmora, Memorial Day Weekend is spent kicking back with the family and friends.

"The family came in, it was hectic last night with the kids, two-three years old, running around so I snuck out early this morning," he said.

People in Ocean City didn't want to waste any sunshine, so they came out in the early morning hours, saying they wanted to simply enjoy the beautiful weather.

And while many are experiencing all the things the shore and boardwalk have to offer -- some are also taking the time to remember those who've served our country.

"I have two kids active duty navy," says Pam Haney of Downingtown. "One is in Pearl Harbor, my son is in San Diego, he just returned from a nine-month deployment in the Middle East, so for me Memorial Day is a very serious holiday."

As seen by all the American flags out on the boardwalk – it appears many won't forget what this long weekend is all about.
