Foam Fills Center City Street After Explosion Left Thousands Without Power

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An explosion at a PECO station has left a Center City street white with foam and has left thousands without power.

Authorities say several 911 calls were received around 1 p.m. for reports of explosion sounds coming from the PECO Waverly Sub Station on the 400 block of South Juniper Street near Lombard. When crews arrived to the scene, they determined the transformer blew and the fire suppression system released a foam substance that began to blanket the street.

According to PECO, 2,700 customers were without power.

There have also been reports of people stuck in elevators in the area as a result of the outages.

Residents have been told to shelter in place.

Crews are now working to repair the substation.
