Flash Flood Watch In Effect For Much Of The Area Through Monday Evening

By Steven Strouss

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - June arrived in Philadelphia with nearly as much rainfall as the 31 days of May combined. So far this morning, 1.09" of rain has fallen in the city and more heavy rain is expected in rounds of storms this afternoon. A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening for much of Southeast PA, central and southern NJ and northern DE. Downpours today could lead to rapid rises of water, especially in poor drainage and low lying locations, so use caution while traveling.

The system that brought flooding rains to parts of Texas last week is part of the same system that is hitting us today. Rainfall rates of 1-2" per hour are possible and any stronger storm could also produce gusty winds and small hail. Despite the threat, the entire day will not be a washout. There will be breaks of sunshine but that will only help fuel more storms this afternoon.

There will be some travel troubles and inconveniences but rain is needed across the region. We've been in a low to moderate drought and rainfall deficits range from 1-3", for the season, in many cities across the northeast United States. Philadelphia measured just 1.19" of rain last month, more than 2.5" below normal. Cities such as Hartford, Allentown, Islip and Worcester reported deficits above 3".

The front responsible for the storms today will get a bit of a push eastward tomorrow. You'll want to keep the rain gear handy, as the wet weather lingers through Tuesday morning. Although showers cannot be ruled out later in the week, the soaking rains will subside and we will have some cooler temperatures and more sunshine by Wednesday.
