Firefighter Injured, Dozens Displaced In West Philly Apartment Building Fire

By Nicole Brewer, Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A fire at a West Philadelphia apartment building sent two people to the hospital, one of them a firefighter, and displaced dozens of residents.

Fire officials say the Chestnut Park Apartments at South 62nd and Chestnut Street in Cobbs Creek caught fire around 11:45 p.m Thursday.

They say the two-alarm blaze started on the third floor of the five-story building and took crews about 90 minutes to extinguish.

"I've never seen a fire like this a day in my life. It was flames and fire everywhere," resident Brian Quinn tells CBS3 Eyewitness News.

A Philadelphia firefighter and another person were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The extent of their injuries is still unknown, but they are both said to be in stable condition.

The Red Cross says they are helping over 60 displaced residents, Quinn being one of them.

"I had no idea it was going to my home, where I live at, and to come see it burn down like that, it's crazy," he said.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of fire.
