Guest Killed In Burlington County Motel Fire

LUMBERTON, N.J. (CBS) -- One person was killed in a motel fire in Burlington County Friday morning.

Firefighters were called at about 9 a.m. to the Travel Inn Motel in the 1500 block of Route 38 in Lumberton, New Jersey.

When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke and flames billowing from room 309 at the motel. Firefighters pulled a man from the room, but he did not survive. The victim's identity was not immediately released.

Chief of Lumberton Police Department Tony Diloreto says, "Upon officers arriving to the scene, they were able to pull one adult male out of the room unfortunately it is a fatality."

Motel guest Karen Goldacker says she woke up to banging on the door telling her to evacuate.

"Hurry up and get out and there was so much smoke and the smell you could smell it."

Police have not identified the victim, but Goldacker says she knows the man who was staying in Room 309.

"He keeps to himself, he's diabetic and a couple times he fell out in the parking lot, going into one of them comas and stuff."

Officials said the fire heavily damaged the motel room where it started, but it did not spread to any other rooms.

One firefighter from Evesham Township was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

It was not immediately known if there were any working smoke detectors inside the motel room.

Investigators have not given an indication about the cause of the fire.
