ALLENTOWN, PA (CBS) -- FedEx is planning to build one of its largest ground  in the country in the Allentown area.

FedEx purchased 260-acres of land near the Lehigh Valley International airport, and plans to break ground soon on a massive ground distribution center.

Charles Everett of the Lehigh Northampton Airport Authority says their vision is big.

"And they are proposing to build one of their largest distribution centers in the United States right there in the Lehigh Valley. We're talking about, ultimately, 800-thousand square feet of distribution space."

The company says it chose the site partly because its access to major highways and its proximity to customers' distribution centers. The facility is expected to create more than 600 jobs and move 30-thousand packages an hour when it opens in mid 2018.
