FDA Approves Genetically Modified Salmon For Human Consumption

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For the first time, the FDA has approved genetically modified salmon for human consumption.

The new salmon will come from a Canadian company.

Some consumer groups are concerned, saying there's not enough evidence the fish are safe.

They're also worried the salmon, genetically engineered to grow twice as fast as normal fish, will ultimately alter the ecosystem.

Patty Lovera of Food and Water Watch says, "We're concerned that the FDA is using old rules to deal with these new technologies. We're concerned they didn't look carefully enough at environmental risks. If these fish got out into the ocean or got out into ecosystems what would happen? We're concerned they didn't look hard enough about whether it's the same when it comes to us eating it."

The FDA is not requiring companies to label the altered fish.

To make sure the fish you are buying is not genetically modified, experts suggest buying wild salmon.
