Fatal Fire In Nicetown Section Of Philadelphia

By Pat Loeb

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It was a tragic start to Thanksgiving morning, in Philadelphia's Nicetown section.

Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer says crews were called to the scene on the 1900 block of Brunner Street, around 12:30 a.m. When crews arrived on scene, heavy smoke and fire were pouring out of the first floor.

He says they forced entry and brought it under control in about 15 minutes, but made the grim discovery of an adult man's body near the front of the house.

Sawyer says the victim was so close to the door, he could have made it out, if the house had been equipped with smoke alarms. He says there were no alarms on the first or second floor of the two-story row home and the one in the basement was not operating.
