Car crash kills 2 in Philadelphia's Juniata Park neighborhood
Two people died after their car was hit in Philadelphia's Juniata Park section late Saturday night.
The Philadelphia Police Department's Crash Investigation Division said the crash involving two vehicles happened near the intersection of East Hunting Park Avenue and K Street just after 11:30 p.m.
In an update Sunday afternoon, police said investigators believe a Jeep Grand Cherokee was speeding while driving west on East Hunting Park Avenue and hit a Lexus sedan after going through the intersection. Police said the Jeep "disregarded a steady red traffic signal," and that the Lexus driver had the green light.
The driver of the Lexus, a 60-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene around midnight, police said. A passenger in the car, a 55-year-old man, was taken to Temple University Hospital where he also died from his injuries.
Two people in the Jeep, the 23-year-old woman who was driving and a 25-year-old male passenger, were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the driver is currently in stable condition after experiencing head trauma, and the man is stable after suffering a minor head laceration and pain.
Video from the scene showed the sedan on the side of the road with significant damage to the driver's side of the car. The Jeep has serious front end damage.
Police have not yet said if charges will be filed in connection with the crash.
