Exercise As You Age

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - As we head into our forties and beyond many changes occur in our bodies and it is important to adjust.

It is not a happy thought but as you age, you lose metabolism - revving muscle mass. As a result, your metabolic rate dips 2 to 8% each decade.

This does not have to happen.

You can keep your metabolism high by strength-training twice a week. Building muscle helps you burn more calories throughout the day, even when you're at rest.

As we get older there are also major life changes. You might be caring for an elderly parent or going through a divorce. Don't cope by overeating or turning to drugs or alcohol. Instead, sweat out your stress. Physical activity helps relieve anxiety and depression symptoms.

These are two common steps that can make a big difference.
