PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  The U.S. Attorney's office has indicted ex-Philadelphia Sheriff John Green on federal charges of fraud and conspiracy.

At a hearing Friday, Green pleaded not guilty.

According to the indictment, Green accepted bribes in exchange for giving contracts, business and fees to co-conspirator James Davis.

Davis owned a title search and settlement company and received money from the Sheriff's Office's real estate sales, and homeowners' properties that went up for auction.

In return, Davis provided Green with a stream of personal benefits, including buying him a house and funneling money to his 2007 reelection campaign.

Green stepped down in 2011 after serving 22 years as Philadelphia Sheriff. He could face up to 85 years in prison if convicted.
