Escaped NJ Inmate Captured In Philadelphia

DELMONT, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say an inmate who escaped from a southern New Jersey prison this week has been captured in Philadelphia.

Corrections Department spokeswoman Deirdre Fedkenheuer says 38-year-old Michael Gonzalez was captured around 2 a.m. Friday by members of the New Jersey Fugitive Task Force. But further details on where and how he was found were not disclosed.

Gonzalez was last seen at Southern State Prison in Delmont around 10:20 a.m. Thursday, when he returned from a work detail. He was first noticed missing about an hour later, when he failed to appear for a routine headcount.

Gonzalez was serving a five-year sentence for a robbery in Essex County and was due to be released in January 2016. If convicted of escaping, he could get an additional five-year sentence.
