Tips for Staying Safe During A Power Outage: Since the last winter storm resulted in a number of longterm power outages, the Red Cross has some tips for dealing with future outages, especially as another winter storm approaches.

To conserve energy, the organization recommends:
-Turning off lights and computers when not in use.
-Washing clothes in cold water if possible; wash only full loads and clean the dryer's lint trap after each use.
-When using a dishwasher, washing full loads and using the light cycle. If possible, use the rinse only cycle and turn off the high temperature rinse option. When the regular wash cycle is done, just open the dishwasher door to allow the dishes to air dry.
-Replacing incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient compact fluorescent lights.

Be sure to stock up on important items including water, food, medication, first aid kits, flash lights, sanitary and hygiene items, cell phone chargers, and extra money.
