Elderly Couple Dies In Kingsessing House Fire

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia fire officials are investigating the cause of a fire that killed two people in Kingsessing.

Firefighters were called to a two-story rowhouse in the 1000 block of South Frazier Street just after 10 p.m. Friday. Crews brought it under control quickly, but during a search of the two story rowhouse, they discovered the bodies of two people in a room on the second floor.

Police say the victims appear to be an elderly couple who lived in the home. The cause of death has not been determined, but they say it appears to be smoke inhalation.

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers says the cause of the blaze has yet to be determined, but there were plenty of potential fire hazards.

"They were using heaters, electrical heaters," Ayers said. "We found several of those in the home."

Ayers said neither the central heat nor hot water heater were working.

The American Red Cross was also on the scene. A spokesman says they're helping six people from two families displaced by the fire.
