Eagles Release WR Josh Huff

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Eagles have released wide receiver Josh Huff.

Huff's release comes two days after he was arrested while speeding on the Walt Whitman bridge, while reportedly carrying 9 millimeter handgun and less than 50 grams of marijuana in his car.

On Wednesday, Doug Pederson said "as of now, Huff will play on Sunday vs. the Giants," but also said he wants to let the process play out.

"I'm a professional athlete," Huff told the media on Wednesday. "What professional athlete don't have a gun? I have a wife and I have a son. My job is to protect them at all costs. My job is to protect myself as well."

During a SportsRadio 94WIP Twitter poll question posted on Wednesday, the plurality of fans believed the Eagles should have let the legal process play out before cutting the receiver.

Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said the decision to release Huff was made collectively by owner Jeffrey Lurie, president Don Smolenski, head coach Doug Pederson, and himself.

"For us, we just felt based on the circumstances and facts involved, it was the right thing to do for our football team," Roseman said on Thursday.

Huff, 25, had 13 catches for 72 yards and one touchdown, plus a 98-yard kick return touchdown. He was the Eagles' 86th overall pick (third-round) in the 2014 draft.

Wide receiver was already a thin position for the Eagles, who have gotten limited production from second-year NFL wide receivers Nelson Agholor and Dorial Green-Beckham.

22-year-old wide receiver Bryce Treggs -- acquired through waivers before the season -- has taken first-team practice reps the last two weeks for the Eagles, and could see playing time on Sunday vs. the Giants.
