DRPA Takes Up, Gingerly, Thoughts of Having Septa Run Patco Line

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- The Delaware River Port Authority is considering the concept of having Septa, the transit agency in Philadelphia, run the Patco High Speed Line, which runs between Philadelphia and New Jersey.

The idea of Septa running Patco is a concept that's closer to the "floating the idea" stage than anything definitive.

Pennsylvania lieutenant governor Jim Cawley,  who chairs the DRPA board, says they often consult with Septa and New Jersey Transit about ways to improve service.

"I can't say that we're sitting at a negotiating table right now discussing whether or not one or either system would take over Patco service in its entirety," Cawley tells KYW Newsradio.  "We are looking at ways in which we can better enhance our relationship."

Patco has already contracted with Septa to repair its aging escalators, and Patco CEO John Hanson says the two agencies often compare notes over fare collection and reaching riders through social media.

But, he adds, he knows of no plan to have Septa take over Patco.
