DRPA Postpones Formation of Committee To Handle Its Legal Work

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Delaware River Port Authority today tabled action at its monthly meeting that would have formed a "legal committee" for the transit agency.
While the timing of this action coincides with an ongoing grand jury probe into past economic development projects at the DRPA, leaders insist it's just an organizational move.
A private discussion among some board members and one of the board's attorneys raised some eyebrows, not because there was anything improper but because it had not been advertised, as executive sessions traditionally are.
Following the meeting, held today at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, DRPA board chairman (and Pennsylvania lieutenant governor) Jim Cawley says the formation of a legal committee has been under discussion for months.
"There needs to be further discussion among board members as to how we're going to proceed on whether or not there's going to be a committee," he said today.
Cawley says there is what he calls a "rather impressive stable" of lawyers on call, and a legal committee would better coordinate the agency's legal work.
